Water Wisdom · Neutralizer Media
The right mineral blend can help correct acidic water with straightforward upkeep, provided it is matched to your water and system.
Clear water can still be hard on your plumbing. Acidic well water can contribute to corrosion of pipes, fittings and fixtures. Blue-green stains around a sink or tub may be a sign that copper plumbing is being affected.
For many homes, a properly designed acid neutralizer offers a practical solution. A blend of calcite and FloMag can raise low pH without a liquid pH-treatment solution to mix or an injection pump to maintain.
What is FloMag?
FloMag PWT is a magnesium oxide treatment media made for potable-water pH adjustment. It reacts with acidic water as water passes through the media bed.
You may also encounter Corosex, another trade name associated with magnesium oxide media. Product grades, particle sizes and operating specifications can differ. Use the potable-water grade specified for your equipment, rather than assuming that every magnesium oxide product is interchangeable.
Why combine FloMag and calcite?
Calcite provides slower, gentler correction. FloMag adds a more reactive component where stronger correction is needed. A suitable blend can balance their behavior across the home’s operating conditions.
Watts describes FloMag PWT as a reactive pH-neutralizing media that can be combined with calcite to reduce the potential for overcorrection. It also notes that the media dissolves during use and must be replenished. See the FloMag PWT product information.
The right blend depends on starting pH, acidity, hardness and household flow. Too much FloMag can produce excessively high pH, especially during low water use. Do not choose a universal mixing ratio without considering the water test and system design.
Use a tank, distributors and operating arrangement designed for these materials. Add other treatment media only when their requirements are compatible with the neutralizer.
Mineral-based treatment, not “chemical-free” treatment
Calcite is calcium carbonate, commonly supplied as processed white marble. FloMag PWT is magnesium oxide. Both work through chemical reactions with the water, even though they are supplied as solid mineral media.
“Mineral-based” is a useful description. “Chemical-free” can mislead homeowners about how the treatment works or what care it needs.
Help reduce corrosion without overlooking other water conditions
Correcting acidity can reduce the tendency of water to attack plumbing and release metals from plumbing materials. That can help protect pipes, faucets and fixtures.
However, pH is only one part of corrosion control. A neutralizer is not a guarantee against copper or lead at the tap. Test the treated water and investigate plumbing-related concerns rather than judging performance by appearance alone.
Where pH adjustment fits with iron and manganese treatment
Raising pH may help a properly designed oxidation and filtration system treat dissolved iron or manganese. It is one part of the treatment process, not a substitute for the other steps.
FloMag is not an oxidizing chemical or an all-purpose metals-removal filter. Manganese may require different operating conditions from iron. A successful design accounts for the water chemistry, pH, oxidant, contact time and filtration method together.
What does routine care look like?
Compared with a solution-feed pH system, a suitable FloMag and calcite neutralizer removes several recurring tasks:
- No liquid pH-treatment solution to prepare.
- No solution reservoir to refill.
- No pH injection pump or feed tubing to service.
Routine care instead focuses on testing pH, checking and replenishing the media, and maintaining any required backwash cycle. An injection system may still be a better choice when the application needs more adjustable dosing.
Media life varies by household
Consumption depends on acidity, water chemistry, flow and total water use. A mixing ratio describes the proportions added to the tank; it does not tell you how quickly either material will dissolve.
Both media are consumed and add hardness to the water, so some homes may benefit from a softener afterward. Proper design and maintenance help reduce packing or cementing of the bed. Follow product handling instructions, including dust precautions, whenever media is added.
