How Does Birm® Work?
Birm® acts as an insoluble catalyst to enhance the reaction between dissolved oxygen and soluble iron or manganese compounds. This process precipitates contaminants into easily filtered particles, ensuring clean, safe water.
Limitations of Birm®
To achieve optimal results, ensure the following:
Water pH is at least 6.8 for iron removal and between 8.0–9.0 for manganese removal.
Avoid water containing oil, hydrogen sulfide, or excessive organic matter.
Chlorination levels must remain minimal.
Note: Birm® works best when dissolved oxygen levels are sufficient and contaminants do not exceed recommended levels.

Birm is a granular filter media used for removal of dissolved iron and manganese from raw water supplies. This system features a Fleck 5600SXT digital control valve and includes a 1 inch stainless steel by-pass, 1 cu. ft. of Birm, one sleeve of gravel, and a funnel and cap. Birm acts as an insoluble catalyst to enhance oxidation and is cleaned by periodic backwashing without chemical regeneration.
It is designed to remove dissolved iron and manganese from raw water supplies.

Does Birm need chemical regeneration?
No. Birm does not require chemicals for regeneration.
What routine maintenance is required?
Periodic backwashing is required to clean the media.
What water conditions are required for iron removal?
The water should contain no oil or hydrogen sulfide, organic matter should not exceed 4 to 5 ppm, dissolved oxygen should equal at least 15% of the iron content, and pH should be 6.8 or more.
What if dissolved oxygen is low?
