How Does Birm® Work?
Birm® acts as an insoluble catalyst to enhance the reaction between dissolved oxygen and soluble iron or manganese compounds. This process precipitates contaminants into easily filtered particles, ensuring clean, safe water.
Limitations of Birm®
To achieve optimal results, ensure the following:
Water pH is at least 6.8 for iron removal and between 8.0–9.0 for manganese removal.
Avoid water containing oil, hydrogen sulfide, or excessive organic matter.
Chlorination levels must remain minimal.
Note: Birm® works best when dissolved oxygen levels are sufficient and contaminants do not exceed recommended levels.

Birm is a granular filter media system for reducing dissolved iron and manganese compounds from raw water supplies. This system includes a Fleck 2510 12-day control valve, 1-inch stainless steel bypass, 1 cu. ft. of Birm, one sleeve of gravel, and a funnel and cap. Birm acts as an insoluble catalyst to enhance the reaction between dissolved oxygen and iron compounds, and the media is cleaned by periodic backwashing.
Birm offers an economical iron and manganese reduction method because it is not consumed during operation and does not require chemicals for regeneration. For iron removal, source water should have a pH of 6.8 or more, contain no oil or hydrogen sulfide, and have dissolved oxygen equal to at least 15% of the iron content. Birm works at maximum efficiency with pH levels of 7.2 or greater.
This Birm iron filter system is supplied with a Fleck 2510 12-day control valve, bypass, media, gravel, funnel, and cap for system setup.
Confirm the incoming water meets the stated conditions for Birm use, including pH of at least 6.8, no oil or hydrogen sulfide, and adequate dissolved oxygen.
Install the system and connect the included 1-inch stainless steel bypass and Fleck 2510 12-day control valve.
Load the supplied Birm media and gravel using the included funnel and cap as needed for setup.
Set the 12-day timer so the system can perform periodic backwashing.
After startup, verify the system is operating properly and backwashing as intended.
