Birm®: The Ultimate Solution for Iron & Manganese Removal

Birm® is a highly efficient and cost-effective filtration media designed to remove dissolved iron and manganese from water supplies. Whether you are dealing with unpleasant water discoloration, metallic taste, or damage to plumbing fixtures, Birm® provides a reliable and sustainable solution.

Why Choose Birm®?

Key Benefits

  • Exceptional Filtration Efficiency: Enhances oxidation of iron and manganese, delivering crystal-clear water.
  • Cost-Effective: No need for chemical regeneration, reducing operational costs.
  • Eco-Friendly: Operates without chemicals, ensuring sustainability.
  • Low Maintenance: Requires only periodic backwashing.
  • Versatile Application: Suitable for residential, commercial, and industrial systems.
  • Lightweight Design: Easier installation and efficient performance.

How Does Birm® Work?

Birm® acts as an insoluble catalyst to enhance the reaction between dissolved oxygen and soluble iron or manganese compounds. This process precipitates contaminants into easily filtered particles, ensuring clean, safe water.

Limitations of Birm®

To achieve optimal results, ensure the following:

  • Water pH is at least 6.8 for iron removal and between 8.0–9.0 for manganese removal.
  • Avoid water containing oil, hydrogen sulfide, or excessive organic matter.
  • Chlorination levels must remain minimal.
Note: Birm® works best when dissolved oxygen levels are sufficient and contaminants do not exceed recommended levels.

Applications

  • Residential well water systems
  • Municipal water treatment plants
  • Industrial water filtration
Disclaimer: Due to FedEx limitations, orders must be less than 150 lbs. You may place multiple orders, and they will be combined before shipping.

Birm is a granular filter media system for reducing dissolved iron and manganese from raw water supplies. This configuration includes a Fleck 5600 12-day control valve, 1 inch stainless steel by-pass, 1 cu. ft. of Birm, one sleeve of gravel, and a funnel and cap. Birm acts as an insoluble catalyst that enhances the reaction between dissolved oxygen and iron compounds, helping form particles that can be filtered and removed by backwashing. It does not require chemical regeneration and requires periodic backwashing.

What control valve is included?
This system includes a Fleck 5600 12-day control valve.
What comes with the system?
It includes a Fleck 5600 12-day control valve, 1 inch stainless steel by-pass, 1 cu. ft. of Birm, one sleeve of gravel, and a funnel and cap.
How does Birm media work?
Birm acts as an insoluble catalyst that enhances the reaction between dissolved oxygen and soluble iron compounds so they can precipitate and be filtered.
Does Birm require chemical regeneration?
No. Birm does not require chemicals for regeneration.
What maintenance does the system need?
Periodic backwashing is required to remove precipitated material from the media.
What water conditions are required?
For iron removal, water should contain no oil or hydrogen sulfide, organic matter should not exceed 4 to 5 ppm, dissolved oxygen should equal at least 15% of the iron content, and pH should be 6.8 or more.
What if the incoming water pH is below 6.8?
The product information states that neutralizing additives such as Clack Corosex, Calcite, or soda ash may be used prior to the Birm filter to raise pH.

Installation Brief

This Birm iron filter system should be installed with attention to the incoming water conditions and the included Fleck 5600 timer valve components.

  1. Confirm the incoming water meets the stated Birm requirements, including pH of 6.8 or more, no oil or hydrogen sulfide, and adequate dissolved oxygen.
  2. Place the system where backwashing can be accommodated.
  3. Connect the system using the included 1 inch stainless steel by-pass and supplied components.
  4. Set the Fleck 5600 12-day control valve for operation and place the system into service.
