This configuration includes a Fleck 5600 12-day control valve, 1 inch stainless steel by-pass, 1 cu. ft. of Birm, one sleeve of gravel, and a funnel and cap. Birm acts as an insoluble catalyst that enhances the reaction between dissolved oxygen and iron compounds, helping form particles that can be filtered and removed by backwashing. It does not require chemical regeneration and requires periodic backwashing.
