Checking Your Lightning Arrestor

Check a Lightning Arrestor with an ohmmeter

Lightning arrestors have a unique feature unlike other secondary lightning arrestors in that they can be checked with a conventional ohmmeter.

With arrestor removed from circuit:

  1. Set selector knob on ohmmeter to RX100K.
  2. Connect both black "lightning arrestor" leads to one ohmmeter lead.
  3. Connect white "lightning arrestor" lead to the other ohmmeter lead.
  4. Resistance should read infinity (00). If a resistance reading other than infinity (00) is attained, the "lightning arrestor" should be replaced.

Frequently Asked Questions

What voltages are compatible with the Merrill Lightning Arrestor?
The Merrill Lightning Arrestor is compatible with both 120V and 240V systems.
Can the lightning arrestor withstand a direct lightning strike?
No, the arrestor cannot withstand a direct lightning strike or unusually high voltage surges.
Where should the lightning arrestor be installed for optimal protection?
For the best water system protection, install the arrestor at the pressure switch location.
Who should install the Merrill Lightning Arrestor?
A qualified electrician or electrical service professional should perform the installation.
How can I check if the lightning arrestor is functioning properly?
You can check it with an ohmmeter by following specific steps to ensure it reads infinity (00).
What types of motor controls can the arrestor be used with?
It can be used with a variety of enclosed motor controls, including well pump controls.
What happens to surges of 500 volts or more?
Surges of 500 volts or more are directed to the ground by the lightning arrestor.

TO BE USED WITH 120 VOLT OR 240 VOLT POWER

Purpose
The lightning arrestor is designed to protect motors and controls from voltage surges caused by lightning, switching loads, or power line interferences. Surges of 500 volts or more are directed to ground by the lightning arrestor. Although the arrestor may or may not take repeated surges, no arrestor can withstand a direct lightning strike or a surge of unusually high voltage.

Application
The Heavy-Duty Models lightning arrestor have Threads and Nut to Attach to Electrical Panel or varieties of enclosed motor controls.
Including:
WELL PUMP CONTROLS (2 WIRE OR 3 WIRE MOTORS)
1. Pressure Switch
2. Control Box
3. Both the pressure switch and control box
Note: Pressure switch arrestor location offers the best water system protection, if only one lightning arrestor is used.

WARNING: It is very important that all electrical work be done properly. Therefore, only a qualified electrician or electrical service man should perform the initial hook-up and any electrical service thereafter! All local electrical codes must be followed.
